What is the difference between an LCD and LED TV?

Next Question

Answer: The fluorescent lights in an LCD TV are always behind the screen. On an LED TV, the light emitting diodes can be placed either behind the screen or around its edges. The difference in lights and in lighting placement has generally meant that LED TVs can be thinner than LCDs, although this is starting to change.

Answer: A LCD tv has a liquid-crystal-display it uses liquid crystal to produce images. LEDs are light-emitting diodes. LED tv's are a type of LCD tv that use LED's to backlight the LCD display.

Answer: LCD stands for “liquid crystal display” and technically, both LED and LCD TVs are liquid crystal displays. The basic technology is the same in that both television types have two layers of polarized glass through which the liquid crystals both block and pass light. So really, LED TVs are a subset of LCD TVs. LED, which stands for “light emitting diodes,” differs from general LCD TVs in that LCDs use fluorescent lights while LEDs use those light emitting diodes. Also, the placement of the lights on an LED TV can differ. The fluorescent lights in an LCD TV are always behind the screen. On an LED TV, the light emitting diodes can be placed either behind the screen or around its edges. The difference in lights and in lighting placement has generally meant that LED TVs can be thinner than LCDs, although this is starting to change. It has also meant that LED TVs run with greater energy efficiency and can provide a clearer, better picture than the general LCD TVs.

Answer: A Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) TV uses a small number of white backlights (usually arranged at the edges of the TV) and a special LCD film. The LCD film can be set on a pixel-by-pixel basis to control the amount of backlight that comes though the LCD film at each pixel. A color filter is used such that instead of white light, varying amounts (as controlled with the LCD film) of red, green, and blue are passed through. A Light Emitting Diode (LED) TV uses the same LCD film as an LCD TV. Instead of having just a few white backlights situated at the edges, an LED TV uses a large number of small white LED backlights arranged in a 2D grid. The brightness of each individual backlight can be controlled. For dark or black parts of an image, in addition to blocking the amount of light passed through the pixels in the LCD film, the corresponding LED backlights can be dimmed or turned off. In brighter parts of the same image, the corresponding backlights can be kept fully on. Thus deeper blacks and better contrast ratios are associated with LED TVs. Additionally, the use of LED backlights typically results in less power consumption than LCD TVs.
